Jeff Lowe's Metanoia Logo

September 17, 2018

Dear Friends,

Jeff Lowe passed over into the great unknown, peacefully while outside with family on August 24, 2018.  Jeff had lived far beyond all expectations for many years. He had come close to death many times over the course of his long illness with a motor neuron disease similar to ALS. Jeff was a most amazing human being, with all the flaws and foibles that beset those with extreme talent and brilliance. Jeff always made the best of any situation by living in the present moment. He had an incredible sense of humor, was a visionary climber and inspiring writer. He had tremendous influence in the world of climbing through his equipment and clothing designs as well as strict adherence to his climbing ethics.

Connie Self was Jeff's partner in business and in life for many years and will continue her work distributing and sharing the film she produced about Jeff's life and climbs Jeff Lowe's Metanoia.  Through the film Jeff's community widened beyond the climbing community. Connie and Jeff deeply appreciated all the people they met through the film.

It was truly an honor to be supported by so many that helped to make the film possible. Our deepest thanks to every donor, sponsor, volunteer and those who worked directly on the film or donated their time to be in the film. Jeff was deeply pleased that he lived to see the film completed and receive 25 Awards around the world. Jeff was loved by many who will miss him beyond measure and yet we are all glad that he is free of his physical body and all the pain and suffering he has endured for many years. RIP, dear Jeff. He is survived by his daughter and granddaughter and 6 siblings.

Jeff received the Ad Carter Literary Award for his contributions to Mountain Literature on January 31st, 2015 at the fantastic Annual Dinner of the American Alpine Club in New York City.

It was a lovely evening with lots of old and dear friends. In 2009 Jeff was made an Honorary Member of the AAC and in 1987 Jeff was given the Underhill Award, it's highest honor. In 2009 the Brits also chose to honor Jeff with Honorary Member status of the British Alpine Club.

Quite a track record Mr. Lowe! Thank you for your many contributions to the tribe!

Big Thanks to Lowe Alpine who generously brought Jeff and Connie to the Kendal Mountain Film Festival in the United Kingdom. It was there that our film, Jeff Lowe's Metanoia, won Best Mountaineering Film on November 22, 2014. A rare Kendal standing ovation followed the film and continued as Connie and Jeff took the stage for a fun and engaging Q & A. Jeff spoke directly through his IPAD to the audience, with his usual wit and humor. It was an amazing few days that included an emotional and heartwarming visit with dear friend Sir Chris Bonington, who sadly, lost his loving wife in July of this year to MND - Motor Neuron Disease - the same disease that continues to affect Jeff Lowe. More festivals to come in 2015. Check back for a schedule of a screening near you!

Vasque and Red Wing Shoes generously sent the Metanoia Team to the Banff Mountain Film Festival where the 950 seat theater was full for the big night on Nov. 22. At the end of the film, as the credits rolled, the audience jumped to their feet. As Jeff rolled onto the stage, once again, the audience rose up with loud applause. After a hilarious yet emotional Q & A, the audience once again stood with roaring applause as Jeff, Connie and Jim left the stage. It was an incredible experience. We are told that no one has ever seen 3 standing ovations at Banff ever before. The Team was surrounded by well wishers at the after party in the foyer of the theater. It was a magical week as word of our film spread.

Vasque, A Division of Red Wing Shoes, is now Presenting Sponsor of Jeff Lowe's Metatnoia.

Bill Sweasy, owner of Red Wing writes;

"I can’t put in words how I feel about helping out with this movie.  I didn’t start climbing until I was 45 years old.  I started with ice climbing because I love winter sports.  Jeff’s DVD on ice climbing was a real inspiration.  I could never do the things he showed, but I would go to the brickyards in St. Paul and practice.  When I went to the Ouray Ice Festival and met Jeff he was so welcoming and encouraging.  I was just a beginner and he was the hero, but he made me feel welcome and encouraged me.  I’ll never forget how much the culture there was open to newbies and wannabes.  The slide shows and opportunities to learn from real pros was what kept me going back and trying to get better.  I’ve taken my kids groups from our local high school to St Paul and the north shore of Lake Superior climbing the frozen waterfalls.  Jeff’s contributions have had an impact on many more lives than just the ones he has touched personally."

Jeff Lowe inducted into Mountaineering Hall of Excellence, Golden Utah
Born and raised in Ogden, Utah, Jeff spent most of his adult life in Colorado. Jeff returned to Ogden in 2002 to be near his mother as she was ailing, in her last years of life. There, Jeff got very involved in the community creating the Utah High Adventure Mountain Film Festival, Ogden Climbfest, and Ogden Climbing Parks.

Now Jeff has come back “home” to Colorado to be near friends and family and complete his film project with Jim Aikman at the helm. Jeff also continues to work on his biography with Will Gadd. After a short stint at the Denver Hospice Care Center, Jeff and Connie are settling into Louisville, near Boulder. With hospice support at home, Jeff continues to “have fun, work hard and get smart” writing for both the book and the film. He especially enjoys his time with family and friends and getting outdoors.

Jeff was born and raised in Ogden, Utah, learning to climb with his father and brothers on the School Room Cliffs, behind his childhood home. He returned to Ogden in 2002, to be close to his family as his mother approached her last years. Upon his return, Jeff immediately got involved in Ogden community events.

On Saturday January 12, 2013 at the Ouray Ice Festival Jeff Lowe was honored by the creation of the Annual Jeff Lowe Service Award. Jeff created the Ouray Ice Festival in 1996 - and it is still going strong today. Some in the town of Ouray credit Jeff with keeping Ouray alive and many businesses able to thrive year round with the creation of the Ice Festival. Bill Whitt was the first recipient of the Jeff Lowe Service Award for his many contributions and years of support of the Ouray Ice Park. Kendal, United Kingdom (January 3, 2012)

Lowe Alpine Ltd., maker of innovative backpacks and outdoor accessories is pleased to announce that Jeff Lowe, iconic alpinist and industry pioneer, will once again join the brand, this time in a non-executive role as Honorary President. The move marks a strategic step for Lowe Alpine which seeks to reclaim its role as an industry leader in innovation and quality.

The Lowe Alpine brand was born in 1967 to the imagination of Jeff's older brother, Greg Lowe. By 1970, the Lowe brothers including Jeff, Greg, and Mike had combined efforts and poured their energy into innovating, producing and marketing technical climbing apparel and packs. Within a decade, Lowe Alpine had become a premier brand in North America and Europe. In the years following the Lowe brothers' departure, Lowe Alpine experienced both global prosperity and difficult times as numerous rotating owners struggled to keep the brand operating at its high potential.

"Lowe Alpine is starting anew and bringing Jeff Lowe back into the fold is a perfect start to reconnecting the brand to the innovation and inspired ideas that originally drove it," said David Udberg, Managing Director for Lowe Alpine,"The Lowe brothers are part of the fabric of the outdoor industry. They created this legendary brand and helped shape the whole outdoor industry by putting their hearts and their souls into everything they touched. I have long awaited the opportunity to reconnect Jeff with the brand that bears his name and to recapture the heart of what the Lowe Alpine brand is. We are delighted to have him involved."

When asked about the role that he will be playing with Lowe Alpine, Jeff remarked: "I am especially grateful for the opportunity to take part in breathing fresh air into the lungs of my fallen avatar.  With this dedicated crew I'm confident we'll see the Lowe Alpine brand taking part in adventures big and small for many years to come." In his new role as a non-executive Honorary President, Jeff will contribute his passion, vision, and a lifetime of experience to the brand that bears his name.

The Metanoia Team is honored and very excited about
working with Lowe Alpine at their new customized

White Spider Level Sponsorship at 30,000

A fundraiser and mulitmedia presentation by Jeff Lowe includes Mexican Breakfast

Join Jeff Lowe at the Bozeman Ice Festival at 10am on Dec 11 for a special gathering of climbers and friends. The American Alpine Club and Bozeman Ice Fest present this opportunity to see rare slides of Jeff Lowe's 1991 first ascent of Metanoia on the North Face of the Eiger. Recent helicopter footage brings Metanoia to life today as Josh Wharton and Daniel Mader climb sections of the "impossible route".  See Josh Wharton retrieve Jeff's backpack from it's icy tomb after 20 years frozen high up on the Eiger and more. A silent auction will add to the festivities with gear from Lowe Alpine, Asolo, Arcteryx, Camelbak, The North Face, Wild Country, an autograped 1978 Sports Illustrated mag with Jeff Lowe on the cover, a signed Ice Experience book and much more!

The Outdoor Retailer Summer Market was very successful for the Metanoia Team. Liberty Mountain generously hosted Jeff's pack contents display in their booth. Many thanks to the 100's of people who came by to check it out! People seemed fascinated with the story and seeing "Jeff's dirty laundry" as Jeff himself was heard to call it. One person said it was the best display they had seen at OR in years! Kyeema Burns from Vancouver BC, donated her time and did a fantastic job over the 4 days chatting with visitors to our display and setting up even more appointments for Jeff and Connie. Jeff's sister Lil and friend Jan also helped us out at the booth. Jeff and Connie were booked solid for the entire 4 days of the show. All of our meetings went very well and we have many more sponsors joining the Metanoia Team! Details to come in the next few months as companies determine their budgets for 2012.

With Gratitude - The Metanoia Team
